Costume Creations

“As a young dancer, I specifically remember being enthralled by the tutus of the older girls. Watching them dance in their costumes made me wish for the day that I could look that beautiful on stage. Now, I am dancing alongside girls wearing those same tutus and getting to wear my own beautiful ones as well. I can safely say they make me feel as enchanting as I imagined.”[blockquote quote= source=”Katherine LeClair, Pre-Professional Youth Artist, Piedmont Dance Theatre”]

In a typical year, the Company uses over 250 costumes spanning two full-length productions.  Professional dance costumes cost hundreds of dollars to build and maintain. Clara’s Party Dress in the Nutcracker averages $425; the Sugar Plum’s tutu is worth $3,000; the Cavalier’s tunic has an estimated value of $2,500; the Flower Corp costumes without any trim, petals or rhinestones were built for $5,000.  Additionally, the Company keeps a variety of sizes of each costume on hand to accommodate a variety of body types and heights.

In addition to purchasing new costumes and upgrading the Wardrobe department each season, PDT spends thousands of dollars on materials, maintenance, storage and general costume upkeep.
